At the heart of St Aidan’s Anglican Girls School, the Senior School Courtyard underwent a transformation to become a restorative sanctuary for students. The project sought to deliver a lush, calming space that not only encourages moments of rest and relaxation, but also fosters seamless connections to the wider campus.
The new courtyard establishes itself as a vibrant, sensory landscape, curated to feel established and welcoming from day one. Layered planting creates a rich ‘cool green centre,’ offering a refreshing view from multiple entry points and nearby classrooms, while a careful balance of open lawns and shaded seating supports a variety of experiences for students and staff. Dynamic pockets of greenery soften edges and ensure the space remains visually connected with the broader campus environment.
The project navigated a series of technical and logistical challenges. Delivering within a rapid construction timeline required efficient planning, while stabilising the site over a former swimming pool demanded innovative solutions to guarantee lasting foundation and healthy growth for new pathways and planting. Each complexity was approached as an opportunity to strengthen the integrity and longevity of the new courtyard.
The revitalised courtyard is now a thriving central destination on campus. As a popular and well-loved gathering space, it delivers a curated, sensory experience for students and staff. By providing opportunities for connection, relaxation, and engagement with nature, the courtyard enriches school community life and fosters a deeper sense of wellbeing.
