The St Ambrose Prep Playscape, while small in scale and budget is a great example of how Landscape Architects as leaders in our community can identify an opportunity and advocate for positive change within our communities and demonstrates the important role landscape Architects can perform in the early learning and development of our children through imaginative and nature-based playscapes.
St Ambrose is a small Catholic Primary School with 280 students. The Prep students have a dedicated recreation area located at the front entrance of the school. At such an important developmental stage in their learning, the existing Prep recreation area offers little play value and educational benefit for these young children. In early 2019 David Hatherly, Director at Vee Design (as a Landscape Architect and Parent of the school) pitched an idea to the School Principal to transform the underutilised front of the school into an innovative new playground specifically designed for the Prep students. A playscape based around principles of imaginative and nature-based play to foster improved learning.
