The Turbot Street Underpass is an inspiring example of how thoughtful design can breathe new life into underutilised urban spaces. Located beneath the bustling Turbot and Roma Street intersection in Brisbane’s CBD, this revitalised space has been transformed into a vibrant, multi-use destination that promotes community wellbeing, play, and connection.

Led by Mirvac in partnership with M&G Real Estate and Suncorp, the project redefines the underpass as more than just a dreary urban void. With an emphasis on inclusivity, flexibility, and purpose, it offers an unexpected yet vital amenity right in the heart of the city.

Officially opened in February 2024, it is a key part of Brisbane’s ongoing urban revitalisation, offering a model for transforming underused spaces into dynamic, inclusive community hubs.

The Turbot Street Underpass showcases the innovative potential of overlooked spaces. This cleverly designed hub blends sports courts, outdoor fitness, and social areas, all under the protective cover of the underpass. From lunchtime workouts to casual basketball scrimmages, the space encourages diverse activities for residents, office workers, and visitors alike.

This project prioritises environmental sustainability, preserving native trees, and celebrates First Nations heritage with artworks by Judy Watson and Delvene Cockatoo-Collins honour the rich history of the site, adding layers of meaning, beauty, and identity. Delvene’s mural, An Afternoon’s Low Tide,” flows across the soffit and columns, illustrating currents and continuity, while Watson’s Freshwater Lens sculpture complements the space with cultural depth and narrative.

This collaborative approach, paired with durable materials and thoughtful design, serves as a prompt for future designers for transforming other underutilised areas across Australia.

At the heart of the Turbot Street Underpass transformation lies a deeply thoughtful, place-led approach. This methodology prioritises the unique character, needs, and aspirations of the surrounding community, ensuring that every design decision adds genuine value.

By listening to the voices of the local residents and stakeholders, the project cultivates a sense of belonging and ownership among those who use the space. Rooted in the recognition of Turrbal and Yuggera Country, this approach not only honours the cultural heritage of the site but seamlessly integrates it into the modern urban fabric.

The result is a space that feels authentic, accessible, and purposeful—a true testament to the power of design driven by place and people.

The Turbot Street Underpass is more than just a functional amenity; it’s a forward-thinking example of how cities can reimagine their public spaces. By adopting a place-led approach, it transforms a previously neglected urban void into a platform that fosters health, creativity, and social connection.

It also addresses broader urban challenges like finding adaptable public spaces amidst dense city environments and supporting community resilience in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. With flexibility and sustainability at its core, this project positions Brisbane as a leader in urban revitalisation and challenges designers to rethink the potential of overlooked areas.

This initiative doesn’t just showcase immediate impact; it lays the groundwork for enduring urban transformation. Positioned as part of the Roma Street Precinct Renewal Strategy, the site integrates seamlessly into Brisbane City Council’s vision for the area, offering new possibilities for city life.

From supporting the growing global interest in sports like pickleball to enhancing cycle routes for sustainable transport, the Turbot Street Underpass aligns perfectly with contemporary needs while celebrating the cultural and historical identity of Brisbane’s CBD.
